Maine's main state program is the Maine State Grant, a need-based award worth up to $2,500 a year ($1,250 for half-time students) for Maine residents attending eligible colleges. You apply simply by filing the FAFSA, with no separate application, and the state FAFSA deadline is May 1. The grant is administered by FAME, the Finance Authority of Maine.
If your student is a Maine resident attending college, the Maine State Grant can add meaningful help. Here is how it works for 2026-27.
What state financial aid does Maine offer?
Maine's primary need-based program is the Maine State Grant, administered by the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME). It is the state's main way of helping residents with financial need pay for college, and eligibility is determined automatically from your FAFSA.
The grant works alongside federal aid like the Pell Grant. For how the federal pieces fit together, see our complete 2026-27 financial aid guide.
What is the Maine State Grant?
The Maine State Grant is a need-based award worth up to $2,500 a year for full-time students and up to $1,250 a year for students enrolled at least half-time. To qualify, you must be a Maine resident with financial need, enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a first undergraduate certificate, associate, or bachelor's degree at an eligible college.
The grant does not have to be repaid. Eligible colleges include Maine public and private institutions that administer federal aid, and the award is based on your financial need from the FAFSA.
Can you use the Maine State Grant out of state?
Generally, no. Maine residents attending college outside Maine are not eligible for the Maine State Grant, with a key exception: students enrolled through the New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) Tuition Break Program, the New England Regional Student Program, may qualify.
So if your student plans to study outside Maine, check whether their program falls under the NEBHE Tuition Break before assuming the grant is lost. For how grants fit a full plan, see our guide to paying for college.
How do you apply for Maine state aid?
You apply by filing the FAFSA. There is no separate application, and if you meet the eligibility criteria, you are automatically considered for the Maine State Grant. The state FAFSA deadline for 2026-27 is May 1, so file before then.
Your step-by-step path:
- File the FAFSA by the May 1 Maine deadline.
- Enroll at least half-time at an eligible Maine college (or a qualifying NEBHE program).
- Confirm your Maine residency and rules at FAME.
- Track your college's own aid deadlines.
Your next step
Maine's State Grant can provide up to $2,500 a year for residents with need, and you only need to file the FAFSA by May 1 to be considered. File on time, enroll at an eligible college, and confirm your residency with FAME.
